Recycling needs a whole-life view

A circularity claim should explain its boundary and the evidence behind it.

RESEARCH BRIEF · 9 NOVEMBER 2026

The evidence

worldsteel describes life cycle assessment as an approach that considers impacts across manufacture, use and end of life. Comparing a single stage can shift impacts elsewhere. This is an industry association’s methodological perspective, not a neutral ranking of competing materials.

What it means for a brief

A comparison needs a shared function, expected life, system boundary and data quality. The same mass of two different materials does not necessarily provide the same service.

A practical next step

Keep collected feedstock, usable output and verified product content separate. Our Feedstock Balance is a simple physical scenario; it does not calculate a life cycle impact or certify a recycled-content claim.
